Shubhanshu Shukla, 3 other astronauts float into International Space Station to warm hugs

Shubhanshu Shukla has officially arrived at the International Space Station (ISS), marking a proud milestone in Indian space history. The Crew Dragon capsule, carrying four astronauts as part of the Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), successfully docked with the ISS at 4:03 PM IST on Thursday. This achievement came after a 28-hour journey through space, following liftoff from NASA's Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.

Before docking, the Dragon spacecraft had to carefully synchronise its orbit with the ISS, matching both position and speed. This intricate procedure, known as rendezvous, is followed by a sequence of highly precise manoeuvres to align and connect the capsule with the station. At first, a ‘soft capture’ was confirmed, indicating a flexible initial contact that safely absorbed the spacecraft’s kinetic energy. Moments later, NASA mission control confirmed a ‘hard capture,’ locking the capsule securely onto the Harmony module of the ISS.
